Layers within layers: country, community, neighbourhood, home, classroom family. Theories we will discuss today: attachment: the dyadic relationship between parents and children, family systems: parenting occurs in families, not in a vacuum, bio-ecological theory: context outside the family that influences interactions between parents and children. Parenting attachment: sensitivity, mutuality, synchronicity, positive attitude, secure, emotionally distant, rejecting, insecure-avoidant, inconsistent- unpredictably vary between smothering and neglectful, insecure-resistant, frightened/frightening behaviour, abuse, mentally unstable, disoriented, disorganized. Consequences of attachment style: why is secure attachment is a good thing, linked to feelings of trust in others and in oneself, later relationships, self-esteem, can use caregiver as a secure base, secure attachment= more confident exploration. Family subsystems: parents interacting, parents interacting with one child, parents interacting together with the child, parents interacting with both children. Family systems theory: basic concepts: wholeness, interdependence, patterns, reciprocal interaction and feedback, boundaries, entropy, adaptation, homeostasis.
