Document Summary

A sign is signi cant because it points to the meaning of something else. The signi er is the visible part of the sign (container of meaning) The signi ed is the idea that the signi er refers to ex. A poppy; the signi er is the colour of the poppy(red) the signi ed is the meaning of the poppy being placed on someone"s lapel. Codes are larger systems of signs that are organized according to conventions. Codes and conventions depend upon our cultural knowledge. He has a 6-pack can have multiple meaning depending on culture knowledge which is an example of a syntagmatic sign. Signs require other signs to make sense of them, they are always referring to something else. For signs to be meaningful, audiences must: decode them, recognizing cultural codes and conventions, situate them within systems of difference, recognize their denotative and connotative value. Connotations will not be shared by all people in a culture.
