Engl 3q93 cixous the laugh of the medusa. She looks at the history of women"s relation to writing diferent from men: their writing was treated diferently, women must reclaim their rights, and write herself. I write this as a woman, toward women. When i say woman, i"m speaking of woman in her inevitable struggle against conventional man; and of a universal woman subject who must bring women to their senses and to their meaning in history. She declares that women should write about their masturbatory practices. Women can remove themselves from the circuit of sexual exchange between men they can be chaste, or remove men from the picture. By pointing out female autoeroticism cixous is saying that the penis is unnecessary its contingent. Then the psychoanalytic notion of penis envy is invalid. She"s saying women are not castrated, they don"t lack anything, they don"t lack the penis.
