Document Summary

Today"s ice sheets are restricted to greenland and antarctica, but still cover 10% of earth"s land area. Most of the modern ice volume is in east atlantic ice sheet (eais); the wais (west) is smaller and smaller. Most of the quaternary increase in ice cover was in the northern hemisphere in the circum-north atlantic. Understanding the spatial/temporal response of the climate system to relatively small perturbations in the recent geologic past allows us to predict future climates better. During the peak of the last ice age, ice sheets covered about 30% of earth"s land area (lowered sea level by 100m) Well-dated records of the elevation of paleo-coastlines provide accurate sea level measurements. These are measured from preserved coastal features, such as uplifted or drowned beach terraces or coral reefs. Pleistocene megafauna abounded on the exposed land area. Land bridges (eg. bering land bridge) allowed migration of terrestrial organisms (including humans) between continents.
