So,too the long coast of norway (the north way) Sweden not controlled from coast but around lakes vanern and vatern and malaren. Denmark as collecion of islands/pennisulas linked by the sea helps us understand developments. Norway= ref to north way (sailing route) sea what links it all together. Created economic base for growth by providing chietains with wealth; atracted more followers; more followers= more plunder. Mobilizaion of large leets may have had internal consequences as well- military organizaion; admin. framework developing. Harald bluetooth (denmark) relaions with germany (oto i and ii) Models to emulate and or opponents around which naional rulers emerged. Familiarity with germany england etc could provide models for them to emulate. Contact with carolingian kingdoms giving a good model for kingship.
