Document Summary

Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death globally. 17. 5 million deaths in 2012 were due to cvd, which is 31% of all deaths. Venous system is comprised of the inferior and superior vena cavae and the coronary sinus. Right atrium sends blood to the right ventricle, through the tricuspid valve. The tricuspid valve ensures that blood does not backflow into the right atrium. Superior aspect forms a cone shaped outflow tract leading to the pulmonary artery. Pumps deoxygenated blood from the body to the lungs, through the pulmonary artery. Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs, through the pulmonary vein. The left atrium is 2m thick; thicker than the right atrium. This is because while the right atrium only pumps blood to the lungs, the left atrium has to pump blood to the left ventricle, which pumps blood to the entire body. Left atrium sends blood to the left ventricle, through the bicuspid (mitral) valve.
