Document Summary

17. 5 million deaths due to cvd in 2012 (31% of all deaths: 7. 4 million were due to coronary disease. Projected that 23. 3 million people will die annually. Top of heart -> upper right chest, below second rib, and right of sternum. Atria: top of the heart, thick walls, separated by interratial septum. Right atrium: receives deoxygenated blood from venous system, inferior vena cava, coronary sinus, tricuspid valve. Left atrium: receives oxygenated blood from pulmonary veins, 2mm thick (thicker than right atrium, bicuspid (mitral) valve. Ventricles: lower chambers larger than atria. Pump blood away from the heart via arteries. Superior aspect forms a cave-shaped outflow tract leading to the pulmonary artery. Brings blood to lungs for oxygen: left ventricle. High pressure chamber pumps blood to entire body. Longer and thicker than right ventricle (3x thicker) Prevents back flow of blood: unidirectional movement of blood. Tricuspid between the right atrium and ventricle. Bicuspid (mitral) between left atrium and ventricle.
