Pathogens adaption affect how long an infection can last. To establish necessary cause, there must be evidence that an outcome cannot occur without the proposed agent* Necessary presence ex: to have aids: hiv infection + a number of conditions that favour the breakdown of the infection. In 1890 robert koch set out what he considered to be the criteria for judging whether a given bacterium was the cause of a given disease. Koch"s postulates: isolate the pathogen (virus, microbe,etc. ) from sick creature, grow the pathogen in the laboratory and obtain a pure culture, inoculate a healthy creature with a sample from the pure culture. The pathogen should cause the same disease symptoms that were seen in the first creature: reisolate the same pathogen from the second sick animal.
