Document Summary

Theory at a glance: guide for health promotion. To help people be healthier, we must direct our attention to helping them change their behavior: environment, support system, industrialization/societal norms, desire to change, psychological health. Focusing just on a person"s behaviour ignores important determinants of health outside of the individual e. g political, economic, social, environmental factors. Focusing just on a person"s behaviour blames the victim for his/her own poor health. Today we recognize health is influenced by factors outside the individual: personal genetics, risk factors, social relationships, living conditions and access to resources, broader social, political, organizational structures, social norms/ beliefs: health. Two key concepts derive from this understanding: health occurs within the context of multiple levels of influence, behavior influences and is influenced by the social environment. Most likely to achieve desired outcome when based on a clear understanding of (poor/good) health behaviours, and the environmental context in which these behaviours occur: understand the person, group or community.
