Investigation exploration search study inquiry: a search for knowledge. How has health research impacted our lives: polio, rubella, smallpox. Influenza: hypertension, cardiac arrhythmia, hyperglycaemia/diabetes, safe food handling, safe community water supply. Simple research application = profound health effects: health issue: contaminated water is the only source for up to 50% of people living in the developing world, research finding: many pathogenic microorganisms are killed by heat and exposure to. Uv radiation: application: solar decontamination fill plastic bottles with contaminated water; place on corrugated metal roofs with sun exposure; wait 6-8 hours (sunny conditions) before consuming. Goal of health research: create connections between, exposure and disease, disease and outcome, treatment and alteration of disease course. Four phases of health research: hypothesis generation, exposure, outcome, correlation, epidemiologic observation to reinforce the hypothesis, hypothesis testing in a formal study, intervention to alter the outcome and preserve health.
