HLSC 3P97 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Aphthous Stomatitis, Syphilis, Venereal Disease Research Laboratory Test
Document Summary
Primary syphilis hallmark = canker sore = lab test or change in the antibody tighters (some syphilis specific and some not) Latent syphilis = no symptoms, but reaction to syrology. Serologic means we are looking for antibodies against the organism. Treponemal = looking for antibodies specific to t. pallidum. Non-treponemal pick up antibodies against specific antigen that are not specific to t. +ve vdrl does not necessarily mean that they have syphilis (but we use it because its cheap) Rpr and vdrl measure antilipid antibodies (measures antibody in patient against lipid againt non treponema ) If patient has antibodies againt lipids we will see flocculation. If after the non test is positive then we do the treponemal test. If vdrl test is +ve but treponemal test is ve you ask patient to come back in 2 weeks cause they may not have made antibodies yet.
