A study that compares average levels of exposure and outcome in several population. Requirement: exposure-disease relationship has not been explored with individual level- data: cant say if exposed were at higher risk than the unexposed. Data collected from 2 different databases: exposure database fat intake, mean value for each country wanted to look at. Use as a start to analyzing something then move on to individual level data. Dietary fat and postmenopausal breast cancer in nih-aarp diet and health study. Excluded men, premenopausal women, incomplete/incorrect/nonsense questionnaire completion, existing cancer diagnosis, death prior to study entry. Group individuals into quintiles would be to hard to leave individual levels as they vary: % energy from fat attained, total invasive breast cancer case: 3501. Those who took in 40% fat compared to those who took in 20% fat, had a 22% risk in developing invasive breast cancer: this is significant because the ci doesn"t contain the value of no effect.
