Document Summary

Communication competence can be assessed by the degree to which the intended goal of the communication event has been met. Ham = cured meat from the (usually) hind leg of a pig, likely salt-cured. In many cultures pork is taboo; therefore ham (a processed form of pork) would be essentially unknown. In east asia, where lactose intolerance is common, cheeses (and other milk products) are not a staple and knowledge of cheese would be scarce, just like the foodstuff itself. Differences in past experience and/or available symbolism can make intercultural communication difficult. Metaphors for cultural adaptation and change: melting pot: crucibles for forging steel refining characteristics into a coherent, homogeneous mass. Intercultural communication doesn"t have to be international communication. Must be aware (mindfulness) that people whom we meet on a regular basis may identify themselves (emic) as of a culture different from yours.
