Co-culture difference doesn"t have to come from other regions. Many overlapping cultures within geographical regions especially now. Within the capacity to disseminate values through media and the economic power that they wield, youth have become a significant cultural force, if not a sub/ co culture in north america north american youth culture has very distinctive. Cultural maintenance/ contact participation power issues beg berry"s two questions: Contact participation: is it considered to be of value to maintain relationships with larger society. Muted group theory: individuals who don"t belong to the dominant group are silenced by a lack of opportunities to express their experience, perceptions and worldviews. In other words, their point of view lacks legitimacy in the eyes of the dominate culture and is therefore ignored.
