Effective communication: you understand what the message is about; getting them to understand. All interpersonal encounters involve some degree of uncertainty and anxiety. The greater the degree of difference between the interactants, the greater the degree of uncertainty and anxiety. Uncertainty cognitive state which is generally characterized by a lack of knowledge and/or confusion and can lead to anxiety. Anxiety an individual"s degree of emotional tension and inability to cope with change, to live with stress, and to contend with vague and imprecise information an affective state which is generally characterized by distress. States/degrees of unknowing unknown person: can be culturally similar, but have no personal knowledge of the person close personal friend: can be culturally quite different, but have great deal of personal knowledge of the individual. 1 cultural outsider who is in close contact, but has a clear relatively long-term date of departure. 1 short-term, no real connection to the culture.
