Lec 6- the legacy of indian residential schools in canada. Beginning in the 1890s -1950s parents had no choice but to send their children to residential school, far away from home. All aboriginal people wards of the state. Gov"t gave responsibility of the schools to anglican, catholic, presbyterian and. Indian agents" were employed by dept. of indian affairs to ensure students went to school, enforced by rcmp. Operation of the st. barnabas school was hampered by recurring health crises affecting most of the student body, especially the 1918 flu epidemic, followed by an alarming increase in tuberculosis cases. Tb is an infectious disease caused by the bacillus mycobacterium tuberculosis. The disease is spread when people who are sick with pulmonary tb expel bacteria. It typically affects the lungs (pulmonary tb) but can also affect other sites (extra pulmonary tb). into the air, for example by coughing.
