Amplify sound in specific frequency regions (doesn"t make s" sound clearer, but it makes it louder for example) Need to learn to make sense of sounds detected (makes the sound accessible but not the same as normal hearers) Need to understand how hearing aids work in order to maximize residual hearing (use the hearing that they do have and amplify everything else) In 1800s, aids were nonelectric and based on resonance. Early 1900s start of electric instruments: so large, had to placed on a table. 1947 technology had advanced to allow for miniaturization of batteries (not so much electrical components, mostly the batteries that take up room for power) Late 1950s behind the ear aids introduced. Basic parts: (look up pic of hearing aid in textbook) Increases the amplitude (gain: makes it louder) of the incoming signal. Omnidirectional: respond to sound from all directions (takes in info from all sound coming from); most are at top of hearing aid.
