Description
Kinship Argument 5/12/2013 4:55:00 PM A correspondence in two or more things between other dissimilar things What exactly is the true nature of disintegration The fear is that the soul will leave the body on a windy day and that the soul will disintegrate Saocrates asks what things will most likely disperse 1. What actually disperses/ what things fall apart? Composite things disperse, things made of parts, fall aprt all things are particulars, particulars are all composites and they all fall apart In composite things that cannot fall apart must always be constant and unchanging But are there really any incompetence , the forms can never change like the form of perfect equality Perfect Equality is always perfectly equal Equal things do admit of alteration and of change and do so all the time, however the forms are never constant, and also invisible You can see triangles but you cannot see the forms of triangularity Just like particulars, the body changes Socrates supplements by arguing there is a rule of form that life is likem, body and senses are confused because they change all the time like there bodies are changing We can have knowledge of the forms because we can have no knowledge of particulars The soul knows the forms and they are constant, particulars is of body The soul is like the master/ruler while the body is like the slave but everyone knows that the master is most like the divine Body is also visible and the body is able to disintegrate just like the particulars, the forms aren’t just incontent, but the soul is also constant just like the forms Kinship argument F is C F is FNV S is INV Therefore S is C too P is not C P is V B is V Therefore B is not C F is C, the forms are constant, F is invisible, absolute equality must be equal if the soul is invisible like the forms, than the forms is constant too Particulars are not constant, Particulars are also visible, the body is visible just like the particulars, therefore the body is constant We are all supposed to conclude that If you have two things, one visible, not invisible, the invisible is the most constant and most durable The afterlife of purified souls and unpurified What ever is invisible is constant and invisible We know the body that is visible but it is in no hurry to disintegrate the soul that is invisible that is more durable that it must last longer than any body could Socrates says the soul goes to Hades In what condition is the soul when it arrives? One possibility is that it arrived in a purified condition, it trails nothing of the body with it because the soul trained for death and dying before separating The souls reward is to dwell with the God forever Ths soul of a philosopher once pure can no longer be pure, the soul can no longer can be inpure therefore nature is lame What if the soul arrives inpure? The soul has taken along some elements of the body, therefore the soul is weighted down and taken back to the visible world soul that is naturally transparent becomes translucent Socrates adds, those who prayed upon other in past lives will be born again will be preyed upon in afterlife On earth the philosophers soul is described as a prisoner because body is prison soul in body gives us very distorted view of reality and the forms We need to free ourselves through our untrusted bodies into the soul, experiencing pleasure in pain are not only bad themselves Pleasure and pain as pleasure gives us very false impression of reality Simmias and Cebes Arguments Against 5/12/2013 4:55:00 PM Simmias’ Attunement Harmony and attunement is only when something is put in there proper condition, if you don’t take care of it will be destroyed The invisible attunment must be longer lasting than the musical instrument itself the harmony and tune is invisible because it does not exist the soul is no more than by product of the being, soul is not much more than the body, identical to body but only identical body that has certain configuration epiphenomenalism- the soul is the body, soul cannot exist outside the body it belonged to Mental roles play to roles at all, Socrates a dualist believed body is body and soul is soul, Simmias, soul is by-product of the body and the soul depends on the body the soul is harmony of the body as the attunement and only works when the body is working in proper way. The soul is the last thing to go into existence and the first thing to disappear Cebes Weaver’s Cloak Argument Agrees that soul exists before birth but not about existence after death Argument based on analogy Weav
