Ascetic dualists: human body should be denied all pleasure in order to purify the soul (ascetics deny pleasure) Enfleshment: merging of the corporeal (body) with the divine (christ was both human and divine; thus body should be respected); similar to epicurians. Athletics and spectacles of the roman period were not adaptable to rural contexts.
