KINE 2P06 Lecture 6: Lecture 6: Gender in Dance
Document Summary
The rules, expectations, and behaviours appropriate to being male or female within a particular society (sociological process) All people are classified into one or two categories: male or female. Challenge = comes with relatively fixed ideas. Doesn"t provide social space for those who are neither heterosexual males or females. Definition = culturally biased worldview suggesting that heterosexuality is the normal, preferred, or superior form of sexuality. Suggests: other forms of sexuality are viewed as abnormal, male is normal, preferred, or superior, female is abnormal, not preferred or inferior. Examples of how these views are reinforced in dance education: partners are male and female. Wednesday, october 19, 2016: females are viewed as inferior, sex as binary and obvious. Suggestions for physical educators: use gender-inclusive language, model and normalize same-sex dance partners, model and normalize female and male leaders and followers, celebrate diversity.
