POLI 2P80 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Structured Interview, Body Language, Snowball Sampling
Document Summary
Involves a face to face discussion with one (or more) subjects, designed to gather information. Recording what was said (voice recording or notes) May gather similar information to surveys, but has the ability to go more in-depth and gather more information. The trade-off is that you can interview fewer people than you can survey. The subject and researcher are both active participants in the process. Conversational in nature, although the researcher controls the situation by asking questions. The researcher should attempt to connect with the subject, share jokes, etc. Fewer number than surveys, so each subject must be selected for a reason to serve a specific purpose. Build upon leads and connections in interview. Until researcher has confidence that enough information is provided. A dialogue/ oral interview, but one administered more like a survey. Researcher has a specific, rigid list of questions to follow. Easier to stay on track, cover all basis, but harder to follow-up, elaborate and branch-out.
