Federal jurisdiction over indians and lands reserved for indians. One provision prohibited the sale of alcohol to aboriginals. Compulsory enfranchisement of aboriginal women who married non-aboriginal men. Set up system whereby bands would elect chiefs to administer barriers on reserves. Land surrendered in exchange for reserves, cash payments, other benefits. Treaties do not cover most of mainland bc, yukon, nwt, nl, or quebec. Covers governance, land use, health care, and education. Assembly of first nations has described this law as a form of apartheid. Defines indian as any male person of indian blood reputed to belong to a particular band, any child of such person, and any woman who"s lawfully married to such person . Right to live on reserve land set by federal government. Right to vote in council and chief elections. Right to taxation privileges; exempt from paying taxes on personal property, goods and services, and income.
