Lecture # 10 gender, identity and politics. Female sexuality is difficult to express in culture and society. Judith butler wrote a book called gender trouble we may agree masculine and feminine are mainly socially constructed ideas that don"t relate to men and women, these qualities (caring, loving) are found in both and contribute to social purposes. She main point is: when we don"t recognize that these categories include a complicated set of characteristics ( we want to simply thing) is a form of power relationship. The power of categorizing and language is an exercise of power. It challenges forms of dualistic or binary thinking. Ones sexual identity or gender are not necessarily natural givens in the world because there are a lot of things added put into a persons sexuality identity they are constructed in social and artificial ways. The use of language to categories and label is actually an exercise of power, language counts.
