For those who respond well initially and who continue treatment, relapse rates are approximately 34% compared to 81% in placebo group (goodwin & jamison, 1990). 70% of patients relapse over 5 year period even on drug. Relatively new to treatment methods of bipolar but research shows promising results. Education about nature of disorder itself to increase self-monitoring of symptoms, to prevent relapse. What manic symptoms entail; what warning signs to look for. Might take action if they are aware of warning signs and damaging nature of mania (e. g. , excessive risk taking like spending spree or sexual indiscretion)
