This has been defined as the process of managing the perceived discrepancy between demands and resources in a stressful situation. Coping sometimes results in a solution to the stressful problem. Sometimes coping simply alters your perception of the situation. Or one can learn tolerance or acceptance of the threat. There is an inherent emotional response to any type of stress. Emotional response can be modified through behaviour or cognition. Emotional focused coping is done when people believe that nothing can be done about a situation. Behavioural: alcohol or drugs, seeking out friends or relatives, sports or t. v. to distract you. Cognitive: change the meaning of the situation, deny the facts. To reduce the demands of stressful situations, one may use problem-focused coping.
