[wastes effect the ozone layer in the stratosphere that is potentially detrimental to living things" development and life] Humanity commonly thinks of the environment as a collection of commodities that we obtain from it but the environment is the very source of our lives and well-being. Humanities use and abuse of the materials available is often detrimental because the way we go about obtaining these materials is often damaging to the environment by creating pollutants. The things around us that we interact with: Biotic (living things): animals, plants, forests, soils, etc. Abiotic (nonliving things): land masses, clouds, atmosphere, oceans, etc. Our built environment: homes, roads, railways, ships, workplaces, schools, etc.
