Because of foreign aid and the globalization of trade, the gap between the incomes of people in the poorest countries and the richest countries has narrowed over the past several decades. The number of people living in extreme poverty in the world has declined since 1981. The richest one-fifth of the world"s population receives about 75 percent of the total world income. The political role of governments in policing the activities of transnational corporations has expanded as companies" operations have become more globalized. Most analysts agree that the world bank was created to serve the poor of the world and their borrowing governments. In low-income countries, the problem of poverty in unequally shared between men and women. Poverty levels have declined in east asia and pacific region (e. g. china, japan, thailand, Vietnam etc. ) and south asia (e. g. india, pakistan etc. ) The majority of people with incomes below the poverty line live in the rural areas of the world.
