Mining leads to: exposure of previously buried mineral deposits, pulverization of rock which leads to increased surface area and reactivity, physical disturbance of landscape which leads to piles of waste. Consumption leads to: burning of fossil fuels. Waste products cause: toxic heavy metals in electronics, garbage dumps. Ions and complexes may join together in aqueous solution which can increase their solubilities. Gas: atoms or molecules move freely and do not stick together, expands to fill available space, partial pressures of mixed gases follow the ideal gas law pv = nrt. Liquid: attractive forces close spacing between atoms, ions or molecules, does not fill available space but assumes shape of container and does not withstand shear stress. Solid: atoms or molecules are bound together in rigid framework, crystals are solids with fixed proportions of their chemical components, glasses are solids lacking long range order at the atomic scale. Colloids and aerosols: very small particles in water or air.
