Inflection generally serves syntactic meaning, as it does not indicate clear identifiable meaning. Inflectional values have two basic roles in grammar. When inflecting a noun, pronoun, adjective or determiner, affixes may express gender, case or number giving information about the role of the word in a sentence. Case marks the role of a noun in a sentence, while agreement has the same role, but marks the role of the object in regard to a verb phrase. When inflecting a verb, affixes may express tense, mood, voice or aspect giving grammatical information and mapping grammatical structure. The first is agreement and case and the second is tense, aspect and mood.
