Kinemes: equivalent phoneme in a spoken language, non-verbal communication by means of gestures, and/or other body movement. Basic building blocks of a signed language use parameters: handshape, movement, location, orientation, non-manual signals. Combining a specific handshape, orientations, movements in a location, one makes a sign, combinations of signs forms sentences, and combinations of these sentences can form speeches, stories, poems, conversations and so on. Spoken language use sounds as their basic building blocks. These sounds (vowels, consonants) are combined to form words. Words are combined to form sentences, which are combined to form stories, etc. System of relatively arbitrary symbols & grammatical signals: that changes across time, that members of a community share & use for several purposes: To communicate their ideas, emotions, & intentions. Transmit their culture from generation to generation. Colour orange red cute. Visual gestural language: about 70% gestures, 30% signs. Natural language used by members of the north american deaf community: not universal sign language!
