16 views3 pages

Document Summary

Review: monism is a type of token-token physicalism that says also that mental states are physical states (davidson = anomalous monism) Analyic (deiniional necessity) argument: bob is unmarried since he is a bachelor (by deiniion he must be unmarried) Empirical/coningent (not necessary) argument: those chairs are red this is an observaion! Davidson argues for token token physicalism by saying: at least some physical events cause mental events, all causality is governed by strict universal laws, the mental is anomalous, so its not governed by strict universal laws. Otherwise, there would be no causaion involving mental events. Aka: you would never have thoughts that cause you to do anything. Says that any ime of event that occurs has a physical descripion and some of them have mental descripions: non reducionalism! You can describe things mentally (philosophically) or scienicically. But they can not be reduced into each other not without leaving something out (holism)
