Document Summary
Sleep a reversible behavioural state of perceptual disengagement from and unresponsiveness to the environment. Researchers could use an eeg to determine what the brain was doing while we sleep. it became clear that sleep is not something that is just on and off, its actually more complicated. Stage 1 (non-rem) the one that occurs rst when you are just falling asleep. the lightest part of your sleep, occurs a few times a night. Stage 2 (non-rem) a bit deeper, goes from periods lasting 10-20 minutes. sleep spindles are about your body relaxing. k-complex is inhibiting the temptation to pay attention to something, and staying asleep. Stage 3 and 4 (non-rem) high voltage, slow-wave activity. it is a deep sleep, no muscle activity or eye movement. Stage 5 (rem) eeg looks like someone who is awake. action going on in your brain, it does not get translated to your body, only your eyes. diagram of the brain during rem sleep.
