Canadian criminal law recognizes 4 types: first-degree planned and deliberate. Homicides by gang-members, death of a peace officer, sexual assault: life, eligible after 25 years, second-degree no planning, but intent to kill. Life, legible for parole can be bumped down to a min of 10 years: manslaughter no planning, no intent, no min or max. Infanticide 1948 murder by mom of her child within the first year of life: max 5 years, no min. Note: rates have been steadily declining (statistics canada) Homicide rates are lowest point since 1963. Homicide rates tend to be higher in north and west: national homicide rate is 1. 4. Note: 505 homicides in canada in 2013 (about ~11% down) Cause of death: stabbing 40, gun-related 27% 85 homicides (17%) were gang-related (lowest since 2004) in 2013.
