Perreault stats: steady rise in gang homicides from 1990s to 2008, before declining in 2009 and 2010. Most gang related violence happen in west (manitoba, saskatchewan, and alberta: 2011, saw lowest rate of firewarms-related homicides in almost 50 years. Knife or cutting instrument was weapon of choice. 35% were cutting devices vs 27% firearms in 2011: in 2011 manitoba reported highest homicide rate in canada (4. 2 per 100,000) for the fifth year in a row, followed by saskatchewan and alberta. Territories have much higher rates than provinces (nunavut has 21 per 100,000: 2011, 90% of individuals accused of homicide in canada were male and majority of accused were relatively young (18-24). Young males also most likely to be victims of homicide: 2011, homicides committed by strangers was 15%, lowest in 40 years. Of these 34% were related to drug trafficking: rate of family homicides has been declining over past 30 years.
