PSYC 2500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Malnutrition, Gender Role, Reinforcement
Document Summary
The family structure evolved as a way to protect and nurture young children during their development as they cannot take care of themselves. Families are economic units, provide emotional support, but childrearing remains the most important family function. Parents and children influence each other parent-child relations are influenced by other individuals and institutions. Parenting = general dimensions that are seen like personality traits in that they represent stable aspects of parental behaviour that remain across different situations, creating a characteristic manner or style in which parents interact with their children. Two general dimensions of parental behaviour emerge: warmth and responsiveness, control. At one end of the spectrum there are parents who are openly warm and affectionate with their children. At the other end of the spectrum there are parents who are uninvolved and hostile towards their children. They may be focused on their own needs and interests.
