When someone elicits a behaviour or lives an experience, cortical activity occurs. They use the resting potential to do work. The more action potentials a cell can fire the more the information carrying capacity. Resting potential for cells throughout the brain vary depending on which area the cell is located. 50% of basal metabolism is used on nervous system for infants. Skilled people use less brain energy than those who are unskilled. Getting nutriments requires energy, which is why ion pumps are used. (na-k pumps) Cells communicate with each other in order to exert control over a population of cells. Since there is more sodium leaving the cell than potassium going in, the cell is slowly becoming more negative. Until finally, (1millisecond) an action potential is created.
