Document Summary
According to lewis there is a distinction between primary emotions and self-conscious emotions. Primary emotions are emotions that are present in humans and other animals and these emotions appear in the first six months of the human infant"s development (joy, anger, surprise). Self-conscious emotions require self-awareness that involves consciousness and a sense of me and they usually development between 6 months - 2 years (jealously, pride, shame). Emotional expressions are involved in infant"s first relationships. Parents and children change their emotional expressions in response to one another. The first forms of emotional communication include crying and smiling. Research suggest that babies have 3 types of cries: basic cry, anger cry, and the pain cry. Basic cry - is a rhythmic pattern usually consisting of a cry, a briefer silence, a shorter inspiratory whistle that is higher pitched than the main cry, and then a brief rest before the next cry.
