They fear rejection and often dislike conventional teens. This disdain usually hides feelings of inadequacy and vulnerability. Teens learn who they want to become, ideally and realistically. Obvious physical, cognitive and psychological changes occur. There is a shift in social roles and how adolescents are viewed by their family, social network and society. Most scholars agree that the beginning of adolescence coincides with the onset of puberty, which is the only universal event that all adolescents experience. The age that puberty begins is different for everyone. Puberty is a series of changes that takes place over a period of years and results in the attainment of adult size and reproductive capacity. In some cultures, adolescence is the period when the child obtains necessary education or ceremonial rituals to be prepared for the adult world. In these cultures, the adolescent period is short. Some youth workers consider adolescence to end at 18 years of age.
