Document Summary

Class 2 jan 15 intrapsychic and personality components: the ego: the ego is everything that we are conscious of. It is concerned with thinking, feeling, remembering, perceiving. Energy which both derives from and drives the id is known as libido: the superego: originates from conflict with the id and the ego in the course of development and monitors and controls the ego like a judge. Its functions are of self-observation, conscience, and the ideal. This helps establish our value system, which are mistakenly understood as developed independently in adulthood and assumed universally as true: the persona: one"s public self, the self which we are known by others. This archetype develops because humans are required to play appropriate roles in society. The persona is harmful when we equate it to our entire personality. The persona is supposed to deceive others, but not ourselves; we are not supposed to believe that our personas are who we are.
