Old montreal beginning of the city, where everything started. first european settlement, in 165, birthplace of the city. Fortified city because it was a frontier town. Center of religious buildings, religious orders were very important at the time. End of 18th ce no need for fortification so the city was restricted, no longer needed the belt and removed it. Champs de mars since the beginning montreal has been the target for attack. By the native, english and americans, bc it"s a town on the border, exposed to danger and an economic center. Not only quebec but montreal was also fortified along the city, big fortification in stone. First a picket wall then in 1717 the crown decided to replace it with stone fortification. Only place in old montreal is champs de mars where you can see the classic fortification of the city. Bastian, parallelogram, had cannons and musketeers to fire, defense in death.
