Document Summary

Define the factors affecting the mutation rate in specific genes. Some mutations are caused by mistakes during dna replication. It is difficult to determine when/where a mutation occurs. In most cases, dna polymerase detects errors & repairs mistakes. If error is undetected then a mutation results. Radiation causes formation of highly reactive free radicals that can damage the cell. Sources can include background radiation and human activity. Before mitosis begins, all cells copy their dna. Each daughter cell receives a complete set of chromosomes. Occurs in all living things (bacteria => humans) Dna molecule unwinds, each strand serves as a template for new, complementary strand. Hydrogen bonds that hold base pairs together are broken & helix is unwound. Links together nucleotides to form complementary strand that attaches to old strand. 2 copies of the original dna molecule exist. Each molecule consist of original and new strand. Chromosome replicate during dna synthesis phase of interphase.
