What is archaism: works that make reference to archaic art. Controversial subject, issues in how we should define this movement, and as always, problems with dating. Some scholars make a distinction between archaizing, and archaism. Archaizing is works that use a few archaic elements in a composition. Teacher considers archaistic if it looks archaic and made in hellenistic period is archaism. We do see it before the hellenistic period, but just because the hellenistic period starts in 323, does(cid:374)"t (cid:373)ea(cid:374) a sudde(cid:374) (cid:271)reak i(cid:374) artisti(cid:272) traditio(cid:374). This period is(cid:374)"t defi(cid:374)ed (cid:271)y (cid:272)ha(cid:374)ges i(cid:374) style. See depiction of pan leading three graces, assigned to callimachus, dates to 1c bc. Follows same rules, with one exception, similar to works made in athens during archaic period. The graces hold out flowers and grasp their drapery, stand on their toes almost like dancing. Have zig-zag patterns in the clothing, the folds is archaic. All are about the same height, little concern for depth, archaistic.
