1981; the first official mainstream mention of what is hiv/aids: on the 24th page of the ny times in july 1981. Rare cancer seen in 41 homosexuals : think about what we know differently now, think about how it would be to be a gay man reading this in 1981. Diagnosed as a cancer that had only been seen in middle aged eastern european men: extremely strange to show up amongst young, healthy men. Article mentions how quickly these men died: which is in line with what we learned earlier; early cases had an extremely short prognosis. Cancer is not contagious: 2 years later, doctors understood that this was a virus as opposed to bacteria or environmental causes most important that it was transmissible. People who weren"t homosexual wouldn"t even pay attention: homosexual men may be concerned or alarmed. But others could pass it off; not in that region, no cancer in my family, not my concern.
