Lesson 4: hiv/aids history in the early years. How has the meaning of hiv/aids changed. 1981 public mentions of aids: primarily associated with gay men as a form of rare cancer, diagnosed and died soon afterwards (probability of survival = very low) 1983 doctors and researchers realize that this cancer is related to a virus not bacteria and was transmissible. Non-homosexuals would have paid very little attention to the initial reports. All people living with aids are dying. Living with aids only affects those with the virus (lack of care) People not worried because it was seen only as a gay man"s disease: it doesn"t affect me attitude . This led to a lack of effort in researching a cure. People with aids are being panicked into thinking that they"re supposed to die. What is was like when news agencies first started reporting on aids.
