PSYC 200 Chapter 14: Social Behaviour
Social Psychology
• Social Psychology: Scientific study of how individuals behave, think and feel in social
situations; how people act in the presence (actual or implied) of others
Affiliation and Attraction
• Need to Affiliate: Desire to associate w/ others; appears to be a basic human trait
Social Comparison Theory
• Social Comparison: Making judgments about ourselves by comparing ourselves to
others (Ex. comparing our feelings and abilities to those of other people)
Interpersonal Attraction
• Interpersonal Attraction: Social attraction to another person.
o Includes friendships, and other relationships.
• Physical Proximity: We tend to choose friends who live near us.
• Physical Attractiveness: A perso’s degree of physical beauty, as defined by his or her
culture.
• Halo Effect: Tendency to generalize a favourable impression to unrelated personal
characteristics.
o Ex) tall ppl get more jobs than short ppl; pretty → assume they are kind
• Humour:
o We tend to be more satisfied in relationships with partners who use more
affiliative humour (making others laugh, to cope with stress) and
o less satisfied with partners who use aggressive humour (making fun of or
manipulating others)
• Competence: The degree of general ability or proficiency a person displays.
Similarity
• Similarity: Extent to which two people are alike in terms of age, education, attitudes,
and so on
o Similar people are attracted to each other
• Homogamy: Tendency to marry someone who is like us in almost every way
Self-Disclosure
• Self-Disclosure: Process of revealing oe’s private thoughts, attitudes, feelings, and
history to others
o Essential for developing close relationships.
o Lack of self-disclosure is associated with anxiety, unhappiness and loneliness.
• Reciprocity: A reciprocal interchange or return in kind
• Over disclosure: Self-disclosure that EXCEEDS what is appropriate for a relationship or
social situation
