PSYC 223 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Organism
Document Summary
Humans are naturally motivated to pursue things that are good. If your psychological needs are being satisfied, we experience a sense of wellbeing. Optimal human development is the result of positive interaction with the environment. The person-environment interaction is two-way: needs motivate us to engage w environment in particular ways, environment supports or frustrates our needs, engaging and satisfying our psychological needs creates growth and well-being. Autonomy operates on both a conscious and subconscious level: autonomous motivation vs. controlled. Controlled motivation: pressures exerted by external forces like rewards or punishment. We naturally rebel from being told what to do, how to feel . Autonomous motivation: things we are naturally inclined to approach, not controlled by external forces. Perceived autonomy is a result of: internal locus of causality: self as cause of actions, volition (feeling free): unpressured willingness to engage, choice over one"s actions: decision-making flexibility.
