A psychological need to be effective in interactions with the environment. The mastery motive: desire to gain comprehensive knowledge and/or skills. Self-efficacy: feeling you can accomplish your goals & believing you are capable. Fundamental drive underlying motivation to learn: tendency towards curiosity; desire to engage (interest, encourages motor, cognitive, social growth, provides means to experience pleasure with progress & success. Need satisfaction = sense of accomplishment (enjoyment) Clear structure: clear goals and constructive guidance. Optimal challenge: a good match between skills and challenges. Failure tolerance: being able to handled frustration and being allowed to make mistakes. These situations allow people to fulfill their need for competence. We need feedback to tell us if we are achieving our goals or not. Comparisons: between the previous self and the perception of progress, between others and doing better than them. Similar to perceived autonomy, when we believe we are being competent, our need is satisfied.
