PSYC 341 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Food Marketing, Pacifier, Negative Energy
Document Summary
How fats are distributed and stored in the body. Under normal circumstances, when a person"s fat levels drop, leptin levels drop, hypothalamus detects the signal and increases the person"s desire to eat. This is how the vicious cycle of dieting works. Trials in humans are less successful than in mice. In a lab, giving leptin to obese mice makes them lose 30% of their body fat in a few weeks. When given to lean mice, they lose all their body fat in a few days. Absent leptin - we can give leptin injection. If there is an issue with the leptin receptor, putting more leptin will not help, as it just does not bind with the receptors. Preference for certain types of foods appear to be influenced by their own level of body fat and their mother"s level of body fat. Tall children favored sweet foods, children with higher amounts of body fat favored salty food.
