Islam was a community , and this community emerged out of arab society and was based on clans and tribes and families . it was literally the religion of the arabs. We need to suspend judgement on religious and spiritual aspects of these things but we can talk about other phenomenons that could help shed light on this. It leaves us surprised when we learn as soon as mohamad died, a lot of these tribes withdrew their submission.
