The central part of the covenant code seems to be the earliest section of law (21:1 22:17) They are simple community laws for a community practising simple agricultur. Are these laws secular or religious in the covenant code?\ After the casuistic laws come apodictic laws (22:18 23:19) These are generic absolute laws that apply at all times. You shall not revile god, or curse a leader of your people. (22:28) These seem to be latter additions and reflect the values of the yhwh alone prophets. Whoever sacrifices to any god, other than the lord alone, shall be devoted to destruction (22:20) This was clearly not the law for most of the monarchy. Many of these laws have a religious nature.
